Chief Executive Officer, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association
Ms Irene Leung joined the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (長者安居協會), an award-winning social enterprise and charitable organization, as the Chief Executive Officer in 2012. Under her leadership, SCHSA has gone through a major transformation and is being recognized in Hong Kong as a role model of social innovations.
Irene had established her reputation well in the telecommunications industry in Hong Kong before giving up a promising career in the commercial sector to join SCHSA. Since 2004, Irene has taken up senior management positions in CSL Limited, and was responsible for the leadership and strategic development of the leading mobile operator’s business and services which included the world’s first commercial launch of 4G mobile service and applications. As one of the early advocators of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Irene has led CSR projects that involved the creative use of ICT. “Mobile Link”, a joint initiative of Senior Citizens Home Safety Association and CSL Limited, won regional and international awards, including United Nation’s World Summit Award Mobile in 2010. Leung’s other CSR initiatives include the world’s first ‘Concert In The Dark’, a fund-raising event for Dialogue-In-The-Dark Hong Kong for the visually impaired, and other projects that addressed the needs of the hearing impaired, children of under-privileged and ethnic minority families, and youth development.
Ms Leung’s latest accomplishment was the establishment of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Life Journey Centre, Asia’s first ICT-enabled, interactive experience centre that serves to change the conventional perception of ‘old age’ among the young generations. Since its opening in end 2013, Life Journey Centre has received over 20,000 local and overseas visitors from schools and universities, NGOs, and government bodies. Life Journey Centre has won various design awards and ICT awards, as well as 2015 Best Practice Award in Social Service in Hong Kong.
Irene has been awarded ‘Hong Kong Outstanding ICT Woman’ in 2015. She is currently the Vice President of Hong Kong IT Federation, Board Member of eHealth Consortium, and a member of the Advisory Board of Institute of Active Aging of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
